Because it’s scary that we’re seniors and are going to have to leave this place soon. But most of all, just because I adore Carolina and being a Tarheel, here are 10 quotes from various folks who have known and share my love for this amazing university. Each of them phrases it a little differently, but the message is the same. Every single one of these gives me goosebumps, and most of them make me want to cry (except No. 3, which just makes me giggle).

10. “Just eight miles from here there’s another commencement. And you know what? They have to look up and see that the sky is Carolina blue. They were praying for rain, but they didn’t get it.”
-Chancellor James Moeser, 2006 graduation speech

9. “In my mind I’m gone to Carolina. Can’t you see the sunshine? Can’t you just feel the moonshine? Ain’t it just like a friend of mine, it hit me from behind. Yes, I’m gone to Carolina in my mind.”
-James Taylor

8. “We both wore a light blue gown in May and will forever have a place in our hearts for the little city on the hill.”
-Unknown, written in note for UNC Graduate

7. “We’ll hold it briefly, feel its pulsing heart before letting it go to impart that Carolina magic to those students there now, and to all those who will come in the endless future, stay awhile, and leave a part of their soul in a place called Chapel Hill.”
-A.C. Snow, UNC class of ‘50

6. “I love UNC. I love the quad in spring and the arboretum in the fall. I love the Pit on a sunny day and Graham Memorial Lounge on a rainy one. I love Roy all the time. But what makes UNC truly special is not our beautiful campus, our distinguished reputation or even our basketball team. It’s us - the student body - who make UNC what it is.”
-Eve Carson, former Student Body President

5. “Down through all the years of your lives, wherever you may go, your heart will always beat just a bit faster when you hear the symphonic syllables: Chapel Hill.”
-W.T. Carmichael Jr, 1950 Yackety Yack

4. “Without even noticing, UNC seeps into your pores. By junior year, she’s in your blood. You can’t remember a time when you didn’t have moments on campus where you lose your breath for a second and all you can think is, ‘Wow, I love this place.’ …And then UNC tells you to leave. And it hurts.”
-Elyse Ashburn, 2003-04 Daily Tar Heel editor

3. “The biggest fallacy about this whole Carolina-Duke rivalry is the 8-mile thing, as if proximity somehow indicates similarity. It’s like assuming East and West Germany must be comparable since they were close to each other. Duke fans believe spending 196 hours in a tent indicates passion and devotion. Carolina fans believe 196 hours in a tent indicates a telling lack of other social engagements.”
-Adam Lucas, Tar Heel Blue columnist

2. “What is it that binds us to this place as to no other? It is not the well, or the bell, or the stone walls, or the crisp October nights or the memory of dogwoods blooming. Our loyalty is not only to William Richardson Davie though we are proud of what he did 200 years ago today. Nor even to Dean Smith, though we are proud of what he did last March. No, our love for this place is based on the fact that it is as it was meant to be, the University of the people.”
-Charles Kuralt, at the UNC Bicentennial in 1993

1. “But sometime when the springtime comes and the sifting moonlight falls, they’ll think again of this night here and of these old brown walls, of white Old Well and of Old South. With Bell’s deep booming tone, they’ll think again of Chapel Hill, and — thinking — come back home.”
-Thomas Wolfe, UNC class of ‘20

If you eat it, you pay for it. That’s a generally accepted rule at restaurants around the world. But one recent morning, at a diner in Salem, Oregon, the rule was bent.

The Statesman Journal has the story: “It started with an older gentleman picking up the tab for a pair of Oregon National Guard soldiers. When the soldiers learned their bill was taken care of, they paid the bill for customers at another table, then that table did the same for another, and so on.”

On Thursday, Sybil’s Omlettes Unlimited became the site of a generosity domino effect. For four straight hours every table had their tab picked up by a total stranger at another table.

Teena Hall, an assistant manager at the homey, bric-a-brac eatery tallied 20 transactions before she stopped counting and just went with the flow. “People were just pointing to tables,” Hall told the Statesman. “Nobody knew each other.”

This wasn’t a “random act of kindness” day, or a “meet your neighbor event”, it was just an in-the-moment idea that sparked a chain reaction of pure goodness.

Lorri Collins worked as a waitress that special day. “I’ve never seen anything like it in the 25 years I’ve been here,” she said.

“It started with one and they took it on and of course you know how it works. One of my tables took two tables, and they took two tables and it just kept going,” Collins recalled.

The generosity of strangers to each was infectious. “It was phenomenal,” Collins said. “Everybody had goose bumps. I think, my comment on it was how many people got to go home feeling good about what they have done and what happened to them at the same time.”

Later that Thursday morning, it happened again.

Hall shared the news. “We have a pay it forward situation,” she said. Then spinning around she addressed an older couple. “Um you two, this pretty lady right over here, Barb would like to pay for your meal today.”

Imagine what it feels like to be exposed to that day after day.

Life changing comes to mind.

Hall admits she had a bit of a cold heart when she joined Sybil’s two years ago.

But then things started to change for her.

“It just gave me this feeling of hope again. It was lost within me for a long time. And it just brought it back within me. It’s a very special place,” she said.

well it’s a winding roadwhen you’re in the lost and foundyou’re a lover, I’m...

well it’s a winding road
when you’re in the lost and found
you’re a lover, I’m a runner
and we go ‘round and ‘round
and I love you but I leave you
I don’t want you but I need you
you know it’s you that calls me back here, baby.
